The J12 was launched in 2000, under the direction of Jacques Helleu, then Chanel's artistic director. He wanted to create a timeless, sporty, and elegant watch inspired by two worlds he was passionate about: motor racing and sailing. The name “J12” also refers to the J-class yachts used in America's Cup regattas in the 1930s.
